Seaford Town went top of SCFL Division One with a hard-fought 3-1 win against playoff-chasing Worthing United.
Danny Kingston had levelled for the visitors following Hayden Beaconsfield's opener, before the Mavericks were reduced to ten men just prior to the interval. Second half strikes from Tyler Capon and Josh Wright ensured the points stayed in Seaford.
Despite the away side starting brightly, forcing Seaford to turn the ball over in midfield, it would be the hosts who took the lead with the first shot of the game on eight minutes. A clever flick by Capon opened up space for Beaconsfield to take a shot on from a central position outside the box, with the midfielder rifling an effort into Adan Jones’ bottom right corner.
Beaconsfield nearly turned provider for a second Seaford goal 10 minutes later after some great work to fashion a cross from the right byline, yet Capon’s close range attempt would be put out for a corner after a smart stop by Jones.
The visitors continued to apply pressure despite the early goal, and would find an equaliser in the 20th minute through Kingston’s deflected strike. After Seaford gave the ball away on the left side, the resulting move saw a low cross pick out the run of Kingston just inside the box, whose strike took a wicked deflection off of Josh Bradley to wrongfoot Roman Chiosa in the hosts’ net.
Bill Clifford’s Mavericks had the upper hand for large parts of the first half, almost capitalising on a number of Seaford’s defensive mishaps. The visitors’ best chance to take the lead before the half fell to Brad Hunt, who couldn’t keep his first time effort on target after Liam Appleton did well to pick him out at the edge of the box.
With only minutes until the interval, however, Hunt’s evening would come to an end after the striker was shown a straight red card for a poor challenge on Seaford’s Tom Shelley in front of the home dugout.
Half Time: Seaford Town 1-1 Worthing United
The home side made quick use of their man advantage, retaking the lead in the 52nd minute in fortunate circumstances. A moment to forget for Alex Webber saw his header back to the ‘keeper go straight over Jones’ head, allowing Capon to pounce and finish into an empty net to make it 2-1.
Worthing United’s first sight on goal in the second half arrived with just under 20 minutes of normal time remaining, when Andrew Younger struck the far post with a crashing effort near the right-hand byline. Amidst calls for a penalty from the away contingent, Chiosa suffered a knock in contesting the shot, yet was able to continue after receiving treatment.
Already facing an uphill battle following the red card, a sin bin with 10 minutes to play meant the visitors were made to play the remainder of the game with nine men, and would soon see the game finally taken beyond their reach.
Seaford made it 3-1 in the 83rd minute, with Wright hitting an arrowed strike into the top left corner after the away side failed to clear from their defensive third. A significant impact off the bench for Wright, with the third goal sealing three points to send Seaford Town to the top of the table.
A highly competitive affair on a cold night at The Crouch, with the away side making a strong account of themselves despite ending up on the wrong end of the scoreline.
